On September 21st 1861, the 28th regiment North Carolina Troops; numbering 900 men, were organized at Camp Fisher in High Point North Carolina. They were soon sent to New Bern where they valiantly defended the Old North State before being called to serve with Robert E. Lee on the bloody battlefields of Virginia. At the surrender of Appomattox the 28th mustered only 213 men and 17 officers. This sign along Main Street points out Camp Fisher's location. It was located along the Goldsboro-Salisbury railroad line and the Salisbury-Petersburg plank Road. Which is today the intersection of College and Kivett Drive.
